Tips and Tricks on How to Grill Ribs

Ah ribs, the meat of summer.   While some cook ribs year-round, either in the oven or braving the cold and grilling outdoors, others wait for that magical time of the year when it doesn't snow and the sun shines to grill their beloved ribs.

It's always exciting during spring-time when the weather is just starting to turn and you can smell the grilled meat in the air and now it's that time of the year, so why don't you dust off your spatula and grilling brush and make the most of this grilling season with these grilling recipes and tips on how to grill ribs?

  • Clean the grill.  A clean grill reduces the buildup that makes your ribs stick to the grate.  Two effective ways of cleaning the grill are using a wire brush or a ball of aluminum foil.  You will see that it is much easier grilling ribs with a clean grill.

  • Remove the membrane.  Make sure before you season your ribs you remove the silvery membrane that runs along the side where the bone is located. This membrane will block the flavor of spices and marinades from penetrating the meat.
    .
  • Marinade those juicy pieces of meat!  Marinating is an excellent, quick way to tenderize meat and also adds additional flavor. Use about one-to-two cups of marinade for every one-to-two pounds of meat you grill.

  • Low and slow. The key to how to grill ribs is best known as "low and slow".   Ribs cooked over low indirect heat for a long period of time softens the meat and makes it separate from the bone.

  • No peeking!   We know you want to check on how those bad boys are holding up every five minutes, but the less you open the lid, the faster and more successful your ribs will cook, so only check periodically.

  • Add the sauce at the end.  Tomato and sugar-based barbecue sauces should only be added at the end of your grilling conquest because these sauces can burn easily.

  • When you think the ribs are done:
  1. The meat should be pinkish towards the surface, but white or tan colored close to the bone.

  2. The meat should easily break free from itself and the bone.

  3. A toothpick or fork should slide smoothly into the meat.
