Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 10 x 13 x 1 pan with cooking spray.
  2. In a small saucepan over low heat, melt butter with water and cocoa, stirring until smooth. Pour into bowl of an electric mixer and allow to cool 10 minutes before proceeding.
  3. Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a bowl and stir with a fork to mix well. Combine eggs and buttermilk and stir with a fork.
  4. With machine running on low, add the dry ingredients 1/3 at a time, alternating with the buttermilk mixture. Scrape down sides and mix until no dry mixture is left.
  5. Pour into the baking pan and smooth top with a rubber spatula. Bake about 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out without any wet crumbs attached.
  6. Place on a cooling rack until cake is completely cooled.
  7. To make the frosting, melt butter with the cocoa, milk and salt in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring until melted and completely smooth. Off heat, stir in vanilla, then stir into the powdered sugar until completely mixed and smooth. Spread frosting over the cake and garnish with optional toffee bits or chopped nuts.
Editor's Note

Cocoa and powdered sugar should both be sifted or put into a wire sieve before measuring and using, to prevent any lumps.

Scrumptious! Delectable! Magnificent! This cake really is that good! We did not have any nuts available but, to be honest, the cake with the frosting is more that delicious on its own with any extra on top. Anyone who likes chocolate will love this recipe, even a chocolate addict like me, lol!

I'm admittedly a chocolate fanatic, so this recipe is one that immediately goes into the must-make file. I'm looking forward to making this and seeing where it falls on the chocolate cake spectrum. One of the best I've had is served by the Smokey Bones restaurant chain, and that's been the benchmark for me. I noticed a range of opinions in the comments, which makes me even more eager to give this a go.

This cake has a nice chocolate flavor. The frosting is pretty rich so I think a little of this dessert goes a long way. Mixing the cocoa powder with the water and melted butter is a great idea. I am not sure what it is, but it makes a difference from when you mix the cocoa powder in the with dry ingredients and then mix with the wet. I have done it with other recipes as well and it is a good method to use.

This sheet cake was kind of disappointing. I've had other chocolate cakes that had a better chocolate flavor than this one. This one tasted closer to a red velvet cake rather than a chocolate cake. I don't think I'd try this recipe again.

As a chocolate lover, this cake was a dream come true! The frosting was perfectly sweet, just how I like it. The cake was moist and fluffy, but not too dense. I'd definitely make this again.
