Ingredients

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 ounces cremini mushrooms, sliced
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 pinch pepper
  • olive oil to drizzle
  • 2 pounds sirloin steak (thicker is best)
  • sliced mozzerella cheese
  • prepared mashed potatoes

Smothered Steak Skillet Dinner

Skillet Dinner Recipe

Heat a large cast iron skillet over medium high heat.  Add butter and onions. Cook until slightly softened, stirring frequently for about 10 minutes.

  1. Season with salt and pepper.  Add mushrooms, stirring for an additional 10 minutes.  Mushrooms will be very soft and starting to turn golden.  Remove from the pan and set aside, keep warm.

  2. Wipe pan clean and return to the heat.  Drizzle olive oil in the pan.

  3. Season both sides of the steak well with salt and pepper.  Place in the pan and cook for 8-10 minutes per side.  

  4. Top the steak with slices of mozzarella cheese, and cover the pan and wait for the cheese to melt.

  5. Remove steaks from the pan and allow to rest for 5 minutes.

  6. Serve with mashed potatoes, top steak with reserved mushrooms and onions.

When I first came across this photo in an email newsletter, I actually thought this was a chicken dish, since the cheese made it look white, but after clicking it I was pleasantly surprised that it was smothered steak! Mushrooms and onions are a must every time I go to the steakhouse, but they always charge you quite a bit extra. This would be wonderful for the winter since it can be done indoors!

This looks delicious! I can't wait to try it for dinner sometime this week :)
