1950s Chocolate Mayonnaise Cake

Using mayonnaise in a chocolate cake recipe might seem a bit strange to you, but it's just one of those things you absolutely have to try. This vintage recipe for 1950s Chocolate Mayonnaise Cake is one of those recipes that will take you back in time. Using mayonnaise makes the cake incredibly moist, and the result will be possibly one of the best chocolate cakes you've made. Try this old-fashioned recipe once and you'll make it again and again.

Ingredients
  • 3/4 cup cocoa
  • 3 teaspoons vanilla
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 3 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 1/2 cup hot water
  • 3 cups flour, sifted
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

  2. Mix first 5 ingredients. In a separate large container, add the baking soda into hot water. Water will rise and fizz so be sure container is large.

  3. Slowly fold the soda water into the cake mixture and mix well. Add flour a little at a time while stirring, mix well but do not beat.

  4. Pour into a greased and floured 11x15 or 9x13 cake pan and bake about 30-35 minutes. Let cool and enjoy.

I had had chocolate avocado cake before but never chocolate MAYONNAISE cake and I am very happy to report that it is mouthwateringly good! Baking soda also always provides a really great texture so I was doubly drawn to this recipe. Well I was not at all disappointed. We topped it with our own tried and trusted chocolate frosting and, thanks to the family and a friend that popped in for coffee, there is not even one crumb left!

How would this be with Buttercream frosting?

I had to come and see what a chocolate mayonnaise cake was all about! I love this recipe. It is truly amazing. I like baking cakes which are different and more interesting than your conventional kind as they draw attention. I have used vegetables in cakes plenty of times but never heard of using mayonnaise so this is a must try!

This stuff is amazing. You can not tell at all there is mayonnaise in the cake. I have mentioned chocolate mayonnaise cake to other people before and I get a big EWWW! It has good flavor and texture. You can frost it or eat it just the way it is.

I have made this cake when I was growing up. My Dad would not eat mayonnaise on or in anything. He ate the cake like crazy, but I never could convince him that it had mayo in it. DELISH!!!!!!!!!!

I would like to have recipes for cakes and breads that Come out good in hi altitudes. Can you help?

I DID NOT MAKE IT BUT MY MOM DID WHEN I WAS A KID WE ALL LOVE TI
