  • 1 egg
  • cup plain bread crumbs
  • 2 tablespoons onion soup mix (about half of one envelope)
  • teaspoon ground mustard
  • Salt and fresh ground black pepper
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cups thinly sliced white button mushrooms (about 5 ounces)
  • 1 tablespoon all purpose flour
  • 2 cups low-sodium beef broth
  • *Plus, any additional salt and pepper to taste if desired.


  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil.

  2. In a medium bowl, combine the egg, bread crumbs, soup mix and spices and stir to combine. Crumble the ground beef and add to the bowl, then use your hands to knead the mixture together to completely incorporate all of the ingredients. Divide the mixture into four equal sized balls and form each ball into an oval about inch thick. Lay the ovals on the baking pan and bake for 20 minutes. If they are not as brown as you would like, broil for 2 3 minutes.

  3. While meat is baking, melt butter in a non-stick skillet over medium high heat and toss in the mushrooms. Cook, stirring frequently for about 3 minutes. The mushrooms will absorb the butter and then release their natural juices as they brown lightly. Sprinkle with the flour and toss over heat for 1 minute. Add the broth and stir until the mixture begins to thicken, adding salt and pepper to taste.

  4. Place meat ovals on a serving plate and spoon some of the sauce over each one. You should have enough of this sauce to use as a gravy over mashed potatoes which make a perfect side for this dish.

Meatloaf or classic mac cheese

My favorite nostalgic food is pork schnitzel with roasted potatoes and lemon and parsley garnish. My mother would make this on Sunday, and it brings back many happy memories.

Toasted tuna sandwiches- Mix tuna with mayo, onion, whatever else you use, then dip sandwich in egg/milk mixture and fry till browned. Serve hot. No cheese!

I've made several Salisbury Steak recipes, and this one is by far the very tastiest, and overall the best! The patties didn't crumble apart as some others did, the flavor was phenominal. I took the liberty to sautee add a few slices of thinly sliced onion in step #3 (along w/the mushrooms). This is the only Salisbury Steak recipe which I'll make from now on. Thank you.

This is an interesting way to make Salisbury steak...I've never seen it made with breadcrumbs before and the addition of mushrooms sounds very tasty. I would assume if you're using breadcrumbs it'll be like meatloaf right? Maybe not...but, I like to make mine without breadcrumbs and prefer using some shredded carrots, and then baking them in gravy that's been made from the bits that are left in the skillet after searing the steaks.
