Barbecued Spoonburgers

Yes, folks, you read that right: Barbecued Spoonburgers. Quite possibly the most unconventional of all slow cooker sandwich recipes, these burgers are spooned onto buns. Make sure you have napkins nearby!

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • 1 1/2 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup celery, diced
  • 1/2 green pepper, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 cup catsup
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 pinch pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 can (3-ounce) tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard

Instructions

  1. Brown ground beef in hot shortening in a skillet, discard excess fat.
     
  2. Put all ingredients in slow cooker, stir thoroghly.
     
  3. Cover and cook on Low 6 - 8 hours (or High 3 - 4 hours).
     
  4. Spoon into split, warmed hamburger buns or serve over mashed potatoes or rice.

I live in the midwest and discovered Iowa loose meat when I moved here. The real ones don't have the ketsup though. The meat is mostly just simmered in a beef broth. They are definitely yummo though.

These are also known as Loose Meat Sandwiches here in the midwest. They're especially popular in Iowa. And good, too.
