Did You Know?

This easy pierogi casserole is a delicious and comforting dish. But do you know about the history of pierogi? The word itself originates from the word pierogi, the singular version of the word "dumpling" in Polish. This recipe talks about the different savory fillings that pierogi can have, but sweet fillings are common as well and are often served for dessert. Some common sweet fillings include apples, apricots, and blueberries, often with some sort of cheese.

Pierogi are not that difficult to assemble, but they do require a gentle hand. The dough made for pierogi has no leavening agents, i.e. yeast, so the dough can be fragile. It is typically made out of just flour and water, but occasionally an egg will be added to the dough. Pierogi are typically boiled in salt water to cook, but they can also be baked or fried. Toppings such as fried onions or sour cream are generally served alongside savory pierogi.

I'm Polish, so this dish sounds quite appealing to me. For all the pierogi I ate while growing up, I don't recall my mother ever making them by hand. I seem to think we always used the store-bought frozen ones. I wasn't aware of the sweet versions, so I'll have to look for recipes for those. It might be fun to try my hand at actually making some. But I do plan on baking this in the very near future.

It is a good recipe however if you are suggesting that frozen packaged pierogis are great you have never tried fresh made

Loaded baked potato ravioli extravaganza comes to mind when I watch this video. It's kinda like having all of your favorite foods in one dish. The first time I ever had pierogis they were fried and I really didn't know what to think about them. All I did know, is that they were good and I wanted more. It would be so wonderful to find a recipe for homemade Pierogis...so I can make this more often.

My family loves pierogies, but this is a great and new way to serve them! This would pretty easy to make ahead of time - just boil the pierogies and assemble everything ahead and then just pop in the oven to heat up and melt the cheese! Sounds very yummy and easy, perfect for a weeknight winter meal! Yum!

We have pierogies all the time, but I just boil them, so this looks wonderful. You can't go wrong when you add cream cheese, cheddar, bacon, and sour cream. Our grocery stores sell lots of different variations of pierogies-potato, cheese, etc. My family thinks they're all good!

This came out really well. I had a hard time finding frozen pierogi in a few stores, but finally did find them. I think the others had them but no one really knew what I was talking about. That isn't a first for me! Anyway, it was easy and very filling. A light salad and it was a perfect meal. I forgot to take a picture of it. By the way, it was also pretty inexpensive to make.
