Scripture Cake

Have you heard of scripture cake before? Whether you have or not, you are going to love the flavors and story behind this cake. Scripture cake can be made using a recipe that references foods found in the Bible. So, for example, the recipe ingredients would read "1.5 cups of Judges 5:25 (last part)."

When you read the scripture reference, you'll see that this verse references curdled milk. In this case curdled milk is interpreted as butter, so the first ingredient is 1.5 cups of butter!

Our recipe includes the Bible verse references, but we also provide the ingredients list for your convenience.

Our quick and delicious recipe comes together in no time at all, and the flavors are absolutely delicious. The cake is fluffy and sweet, and it has just the right amount of sugary glaze on top. You'll love making this cake, and sharing the origins of the recipe, with your family!

The History of Scripture Cake

The earliest known record of "Scripture Cake" can be found in a 1897 edition of the Atlanta Constitution though many researchers believe that this tradition may date back as late at the 1700s in England and Ireland. It is also rumored to have been a favorite recipe of first lady, Dolly Madison (Jame Madison's wife).

Scripture cake, also known as bible cake or old testament cake, was extremely popular in the late 1800s. Especially popular in the southern Appalachians in the USA, this cake was designed to teach young women about bible verses and baking.

How often do you get a delicious cake recipe and a Bible lesson all in one. This Scripture Cake is not only a yummy sweet treat, but a great opportunity to share the history of the ingredients and Bible verses attached to them. I made this recently for a church supper and I made up little recipe cards with the ingredients and bible verses. We had a great time eating dessert and reading and discussing the verses.

The recipe of this Scripture Cake is kinda funny because they're all based in the Bible. But this finished product looks so yummy. You need to read the Bible to understand what the words in the recipe mean.

I was not familiar with what scripture cake was before now, but the concept is really clever! The execution is as well - the cake is moist, the fruits and nuts make it full of flavor, and I very much enjoy the sweetness of the glaze.

Talk about a sweet cake! Delicious. I'd eat that again for sure.

This was really yummy! The cake has great texture, and the glaze is very nice.
