One-Pan Double Chocolate Cake will be your new, favorite, easy cake recipe! This is one of those chocolate cake recipes that everyone can enjoy because not only is it super moist and chocolatey, it's also egg, milk, and butter free. Instead, vegetable oil and other common ingredients take their place. It's made super chocolatey with cocoa powder and you can take it to the next level with a delicious chocolate frosting recipe or another frosting of your choice. This cake recipe was adapted from a similar recipe made frequently during the Great Depression when eggs, milk, and butter were too expensive for most households to buy.

  • 1 1/2 cup flour (all-purpose)
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa (unsweetened)
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 5 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 cup water


  1. Mix first 5 ingredients in a greased 8-inch square baking pan.

  2. Combine water and vinegar together and pour into dry ingredients.

  3. Combine vanilla and oil together and pour into dry ingredients. Mix well until smooth.

  4. Bake on the middle rack of an oven at 350 degrees F for 35 minutes. Check with a toothpick to make sure it comes out clean. Let cool. Top cake with your favorite frosting!

I love that this cake has no eggs as my great-niece is allergic to eggs. I'll be so glad to bring over a cake that she can eat.

This really is a super easy cake to make. I know it's supposed to be a "one bowl" cake, however you can not possibly get all the flour lumps out without mixing it in a bowl with a mixer. (I prefer my cakes to not have white specks of flour throughout). Regardless, even with the extra bowl this was a super easy recipe that came out great. I topped with seedless raspberry jelly and drizzles of chocolate syrup. Yum! Also, I made in my toaster oven, with the temperature turned down 10-degrees.

I just adore recipes that are made in one pan. This seems really easy and I have to admit, the ingredient list reads a little odd. I can only hope that it is as delicious as it looks.

I love that this cake is basically dairy free, vintage like my grandmother used to make, and still looks and sounds like a wonderful treat for any chocolate lover. Chocolate has never really been my thing but this is exactly what I would love to have for those days when chocolate is the only thing that will make my day better. Raspberry compote and some whipped cream would compliment this beautifully!

I know this cake by the name Wacky Chocolate Cake. I use one cup of coffee instead of the one cup of water. It is very good and it is a nice size recipe for just two people.

I make lots of cakes but this has to be the easiest chocolate cake I have ever seen. I have to try it. How could I not? It is cheap, easy and there is hardly a thing left to clean up! I'm excited to try it to see how it turns out. I'm going to try a gluten free verson of this.

I love a recipe for an easy cake that doesn't take a lot of ingredients. I like that this is made in an 8 inch pan too because sometimes all you want is just a little dessert or maybe it's just 2 or 3 people for dinner and this is plenty. It looks chocolate-y and delicious and I'll be trying this out soon. I also think it's a great dessert for kids to try to make. Thanks for a nice recipe idea!

I've always been fascinated by recipes from the Depression era and wartime, showing how inventive people were with alternative ingredients for making various foods. This version of chocolate cake is no exception. The use of vinegar is the one thing that might give me some hesitation in trying this, but I'm really curious as to how it tastes. It looks really moist and yummy, so I need to give this one a go.
