Cooking Time10 min

Ingredients

  • 4 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1 scallion, minced
  • 1 teaspoon lemon pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • 12 wonton wrappers (see note)
  • Vegetable or canola oil for frying
  • Plum sauce and/or sweet and sour sauce

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl, combine the cream cheese, scallion, lemon pepper, garlic powder, paprika, and sea salt. Using a small ice cream scoop, place a teaspoon-sized ball of cream cheese mixture in the center of each wrapper. Dip your finger in water and moisten the corners of the wrapper, then fold up and seal.

  2. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the wontons and fry until golden brown on each side, about 5 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool slightly. Serve with plum sauce or sweet and sour sauce, or both!

Notes:

  1. If you can't find wonton wrappers, feel free to cut an egg roll wrapper into 4 small squares.

Wontons are one the first things I always have to order when eating Chinese and with good reason, they're delicious. I don't think I've tried plum sauce before but yum, is it sold at the grocery store? A while back I actually asked a cook from my favorite Chinese restaurant how to make the crab cheese wontons that they served and it's surprisingly easier than I would have ever thought. Basically, cream cheese and crab mixed together and the wonton wrappers are pinched together like little purses and fried...so easy!

Wontons are one of the first things I get when I go to the Chinese restaurant. I never thought to look for a recipe to make them for myself at home. I am happy to run across this recipe and noting just how easy they are to make. I only hope I do them justice.

Okay, so we hade Chinese food last night and guess what my appetizer was? Man, this cream cheese wonton recipe sounds way to easy to be true. For 4 bucks I could have had way more than 6 wontons.

I love the versatility of these Easy Cream Cheese Wontons. They really are quick and easy to make, and can be served in so many ways. I have served them as an appetizer at party's with sweet and sour sauce for dipping. I have also served them as a snack with a sprinkling of powdered sugar, or cinnamon sugar.
