Buffalo Wing Dings

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds seitan, cut into strips
  • 3 tablespoons vegan ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce (or tamari)
  • 2 teaspoons vegan sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch or arrowroot powder
  • water

Instructions

  1. In a 12" skillet over medium high heat, brown seitan on all sides.
     
  2. Add ketchup, soy, sugar, ginger, crushed red pepper and 3/4 cup water.
     
  3. Heat to boiling. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 5-10 minutes.
     
  4. In a cup stir cornstarch with 2 tablespoons water.
     
  5. Gradually stir cornstarch mixture into simmering liquid in skillet.
     
  6. Cook until mixture thickens slightly and boils.
     
  7. Cover seitan with mixture and serve. Serves 6-8

I have been thinking of becoming a vegetarian for a while now but have been slightly afraid to take the leap with been anemia but i think it's time to finally give in and give it a go! I have been reading up on seitan and have head its full of gluten and not a complete Protein an high in salt, has anyone used tis before and is it as bad as it sounds because the above dish sounds delish...thanks in advance for any help given

This sounds amazing. Seitan is absolutely one of my favourite meat-free ingredients and really overlooked (much easier to buy Quorn or soya). One little warning that Seitan is made of gluten and not suitable for anyone with an intolerance. But it's soft, juicy and makes brilliant recipes like these Wing Dings. I tend to buy seitan pre-made in a can. Can anyone advise whether it's easy to make at home?
