For a taste of summer on the boardwalk any time of year, this A & W copycat sauce recipe can't be beat. To get the authentic Coney Island taste, use Kogel hot dogs and rehydrate dry minced onions in boiling water.

  • 2 small onions, finely chopped
  • 5 pounds hamburger
  • 64 ounces Hunt's Tomato Paste
  • 64 ounces Hunt's Tomato Puree
  • 1 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon pepper
  • 1 tablespoon celery seed
  • 3 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon salt

  1. Brown hamburger and onions in a very large skillet; drain.
  2. Add remaining ingredients and simmer for 3 1/2 hours, stirring frequently as it will tend to stick.

This receipe calls for two 64oz can of Hunts tomatoe puree. Is the correct?

I made this sauce for a family get-together and everyone loved it. I froze what was left over in small freezer bags for later.

freeze the sauce in containers that would serve 4-6, thaw at room temp, or over night in frig. you are ready to serve when you crave a coney island mood............

Divide every ingredient by four. Doesn't have to be perfect. It's not a cake. I did, and it works...I does freeze well too.

I agree-it would be great to have it broken down to feed 4-6! korbie33

I remember this sauce and we love it. I would love to have the recipe boken down for a 4-6 people.
