There's something to be said for the simplicity of just the frosting on the top, but I think I'd increase the amount of ingredients slightly to make enough to do the sides as well. I think I'd also sprinkle some additional chopped pecans on the frosting on the top. It's a great and very delicious cake that's always been a hit.

I make an Italian cream cake but I ice the sides too and it looks a lot prettier then this cake! It's my favorite cake
