Grandma's Magic Cake

By: Z from
Grandmas Magic Cake
Grandmas Magic Cake

What is the secret behind Grandma's Magic Cake recipe? Would you believe us if we told you that a single cake batter is poured into a cake pan and comes out of the oven with three distinct layers? Guess you'll just have to try it for yourself to find out. This tasty, magic cake recipe only requires seven ingredients and making it is practically fool-proof. Simply create the batter by combining ingredients together exactly like the instructions suggest -- this will ensure your cake separates into the respectively magical layers. Pour your batter into a cake pan, bake, and presto! The cake will come out of the oven with a dense, crust-like layer on the bottom, a gooey, custard-like layer in the middle, and a fluffy cake layer on top. You won't believe your eyes!

Check out our test kitchen version for Magic Cake below and try making your own at home by following the full recipe!

The Magic Behind Magic Cake

  1. Looking at this recipe, you're probably thinking that there is no way that this Magic Cake is possible. How in the world does one batter give you three very different cake layers? We have a few insights to this seemingly impossible dessert -- it's all in the process!

    1. The egg yolks and flour are dense and sink to the bottom in the baking process, which creates the crust at the bottom of the cake.
    2. The milk is less dense than the yolks and flour, so it stops in the middle to create the custard layer.
    3. Egg whites are light and airy after being beaten, so they float to the top to create the light, fluffy cake layer.

Regardless of whether your cake ends up with these three very distinct layers or not, this cake is still very delicious. It doesn't require any ingredients that you wouldn't normally have in your refrigerator or pantry. Your friends and family will still love the unique flavor and composition of this cake.

Such a clever Grandma to invent a cake that makes magic layers AND tastes absolutely LUSCIOUS! The children were mesmerized by the fact that the layers just appeared as if by magic and we were all so happy with the delightful tastes that we will definitely make this many times in the future.

I can't believe this recipe calls for only seven ingredients! This is the perfect choice if you need to whip up a last-minute dessert.

I saw this recipe said it's one layer that magically separates and I was like, wait-what?? Now that I've read the recipe it makes sense. I do think having the milk luke warm will make a difference! I enjoy custard and I think my family would go for this recipe especially since it looks really neat.

I really like the way this cake looks and the ingredients make me think that it would taste good too. The recipe sounds like it would be rather easy and would make a good springtime cake with its lightness. I would probably serve this with whipped cream too, but that's just me, I love the stuff. I will be making this soon!

I tend to agree that this cake looks very complicated but is surprisingly easy. It is magic! I enjoyed reading the science behind how the cake gets its three layers. I do like vanilla but I kind of like the idea of using rum. I think I might do that. I believe that a bit of alcohol in baking and cooking is always a good idea as it bring another depth of flavor to a dish.

This recipe is surprisingly simple compared to the way it looks. The list of ingredients is so small that I think I already have all the ingredients on hand anyway. I might try this one tonight and have it ready to go for dessert after tomorrows dinner. That is if I can figure out what dinner recipe I want to try first.

I always thought cakes or pies that separated into layers as they baked were so cool. The combination of custard and cake is one of my favorite kinds of desserts. It is really nice to be able to bake it all together and have it turn out like that. I will be making this a lot, I am sure.

This sounds like an old-fashioned recipe, although I've never heard of magic cake! It sounds so amazing, I can't wait to try it. It's hard to believe a few simple ingredients can bake into such an amazing layer cake! I saw that there is an option to make it chocolate which sounds absolutely amazing! I wonder if anyone has tried any other flavour like lemon or even mocha? Can't wait to try this one!

It's pretty magical how just a few ingredients and one pan can transform into a delicious layered cake. The custard filling is what gives this cake its amazing flavor and soft, creamy texture. The other comments are interesting about the presentation. I definitely think this can be tough to get picture perfect.

Oh wow, I so have to try this Grandma's Magic Cake recipe. I love when a recipe comes out when you think there is no way it would work. After reading all the comments here and under the written recipe, I'll be adding the lemon to the egg whites to help stable them, and then gently fold them into the mixture. I so love the magic of baking. Thank you so much for sharing this free recipe.

I agree, I have to make this! I don't even know the science behind why it does what it does, but this looks amazing. I can't wait to try the custard layer. It sounds like it is very tasty, but I hope I don't eat more than one piece the first try!

these recipes i have to make!!!!!

Oh man, I have GOT to make this!

It was OK...but looked nothing like the picture. The picture shows 3 distinct layers...mine had 2. The top cake-like layer did not develop.

This is a very finicky recipe. We made this in our test kitchen, and it didn't look exactly like the picture either. It had all three layers, but they were much more subtle than the picture suggests. The flavors were there, but the presentation left something to be desired. We think this is one of those recipes that you must perfect over time to get just right. Best served cold It tastes awesome.

I made this for dessert tonight, and all I'm going to say is "ITS ALL GONE !!" Yumm

Sorry, way too many steps.

too many steps? You don't even attempt to make the recipe that has no more steps than making an angel food cake but you give it a 1 star so it brings down the overall rating? They should delete comments like yours

Horrible cake, don't waste your time making it...

Just wondering if anyone has tried this but had added fruit to it. I think this is a nice recipe but i think it would be even better with some berries or apricots in it
