The ground beef is seasoned with salt, pepper, oregano, and garlic for simple flavor. The cabbage wilts down and mixes in perfectly with the ground beef. If you feel like it, add a bit of bacon. Southern Fried Cabbage is a terrific dinner that's quick to make, so give it a try this week.


  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 head of cabbage, chopped
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1/2 green pepper, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt and pepper, or to taste
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 pinch white sugar
  • 3 slices of bacon, cut into thirds (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder


  1. Fry ground beef just until done.
  2. Add onions, then cabbage and butter. Once the cabbage has wilted down a little, add the green pepper and seasonings. Cook until vegetables are tender, stirring occasionally.

I will add this recipe to my monthly food plan but will change it a little. Instead of ground beef, I am going add my homemade shredded chicken.

Cabbage is one of my favorite veggies and this Southern Fried cabbage dish sounds very tasty indeed. I love the idea of adding bacon, green pepper, garlic and oregano to the cabbage and ground beef and I also like that, because its an economical dish, the budget doesnt take a pounding. Im also thinking of perhaps substituting vegetables for the beef for a vegetarian version - cauliflower, broccoli, zucchini, etc, or whatever happens to be growing in our veggie garden at the time.

It would help if you stated how many servings the recipe makes.As I'm cooking just for 2 it is difficult to gauge how much to use without guidance on how many people the recipe is intended for

I use cabbage, cooked bacon, red wine vinegar, some sugar and a small amount of bacon grease. Awesome for late night leftover snacks. This is the only way I do it and if you use purple cabbage, the color is nice. Also slice up some granny Smuts apples and add them. So good.

I have used hamburger meat in my recipe in the past, but did not have much flavor. I also make mine with jalapeno smoked sausage and omit the hamburger meat. I will have to try this with the spices mentioned and then mine should be more flavorful. I will try it tonight.

Bacon is the first thing I cook as it flavors the cabbage. Years ago the bacon drippings were used to use as the cooking oil for most things. I remember all those wonderful flavors brought out by bacon. In the fried cabbage I learned to cook we did not use hamburger or garlic but why not?

Where does the bacon come in? No mention of it in recipe or video.

What temp and for how long?

I cook the bacon first add the onions and then the cabbage. Oh the aroma is fantastic. I love it for leftovers too. I know some people use coconut oil to cook it if they do not eat meat. I imagine the the garlic would be a nice addition with coconut oil.

Can part of this be frozen for another time or am I better off cutting the recipe in half?

I made this two nights ago. Fried the bacon first, then used the same pan for the remainder of the recipe, leaving out the butter. I put it over plain mashed potatoes(low fat milk, no butter) on a plate. We're having some of the leftovers for dinner tonight! Then there'll be enough left for one or two lunches!


I don't like cooked cabbage except stir fried or crisp-tender w/ cheese sauce, but this is a must try! It sounds delicious!

I used to make these a lot when had the family taking lunches. I would use frozen bread dough on a lightly floured board, roll each loaf of dough into a 12 inch circle. Cut each circle into 6 wedges. Spoon cabbage/beef filling onto center of each dough piece, dividing equally. Pull three points of each wedge up to the center and pinch to seal. Place on a lightly greased cookie sheet. If desired, brush dough with melted butter or egg wash (1 egg white with 2 tablespoons water). Bake in preheated 350 degree oven for 30 minutes, or until golden brown. Serve hot, or wrap and freeze for heating later.

I would say the serving size is 4-6.

Dear tmlandowski: Yes, I do drain ground beef fat. You will be adding 2 T butter and I add some fried bacon grease, just a little for taste and no sugar. e.

Do you drain the fat from frying the ground beef?

I tried this recipe today for our New Year's late lunch/dinner. My husband absolutely loved it and I did too. He says we need to have it more often and the recipe is a keeper!

I have made a similar recipe for years. Add Soy sauce to the meat and cabbage to taste and then serve over rice.You can also kick it up it up with a few Julianne carrots or mushrooms.

well not the fried cabage I grew up on here in the great northeast of "Down East" Maine this sounds like a great one pan meal too me can't wait to try it out ... The way my granny made fried cabage was to try out "fry" 3-8 very thin slices of salt pork depening on the size of your cabage very thinly slice into long shreds your cabage add to fat with a goodly amount of salt and pepper fry till just crisp and serve as a side dish with a meal of baked beans and good old red hotdogs

Hi fellow Mainer. I still live in Maine, south eastern, and your way is the way my mother used to make fried cabbage. I have not had fried cabbage for many years (I'm 75), but I am going to make some next month when it is cooler. It has been very humid here. By the way, most people do not know what "try out" means. Hi Chef 5894447 - If you'd like to freeze this dish, here's a method: Freeze in a separate polythene bag which has been sealed well, or in an airtight rigid plastic container. Defrost in the fridge overnight, then reheat in a frying pan, or in a covered ovenproof dish in the oven until piping hot. Hope this helps! -Editors of RecipeLion

No Chef it wont But this isn't TRUE southern fried cabbage Although it sounds really good here's how to make REAL southern fried cabbage FYI I grew up and live in upstate South Carolina This is for LARGE head of cabbage I like to use a BIG chicken frying pan Cast iron is best but any big deep frying pan will do Fry up - strips of bacon more if you need more bacon fat You should have about TBLS of fat for a LARGE head of cabbage Chunk up med onions and toss into hot fat and start carmalizing them Chunk up cabbage into bite size pieces and add as much to the pan as you can Add salt and pepper to taste but go heavy on the pepper Toss to mix with onions and coat cabbage with the fat As it cooks down add remaining cabbage until it's allRead More in the pot Make sure you can hear a sizzle and keep turning Once it's cooking steady not too hot turn down and put the lid on Cook until desired tenderness A little bit before you are ready to serve add crumbled bacon and mix well Turn heat down to keep warm until the rest of the meal is ready I also make this using smoked sausage or brats Just be sure to brown them in the fat with the onions I cut the sausage into coins

This recipe from the chef from S. Carolina sounds Great. I usually fry it after boiling it 1st. I put Marg. in huge pan & melt it,then put in cooked drained cabbage, chopped onion & salt & pepper-Yummy. Sometimes I fry some cooked boiled potatoes with it & shredded carrots too. I definetly have to try the Bacon though-Thanks.

Being from the south, we also make our fried cabbage in a cast iron skillet , fry bacon & add cabbage as above recipe states, When cabbage is done we add cooked egg noodles! YUMMY

I too use bacon in this Its tradition However I start off with two teaspoons of shortening in a heavy saut pan over medium heat I then add - slices of bacon thats been diced After the bacon has been browned I remove it with a slotted spoon and reserve it for later I then add a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes stir that around for a few seconds Then add med Vidalia sweet onions that have been chopped When they start to wilt add the chopped cabbage Hint for a better cabbage chop it put it in a colander and hit it with a tablespoon of salt Let it sit for an hour or so Then rinse it real good then dry it with paper towels or a salad spinner Then add it to the pan When it wilts down tender-crisp its done Remove everything from the pan withRead More a slotted spoon and transfer to a serving bowl There youll toss in the crisped bacon bits and its ready to serve I also use the remaining pan drippings to fry up some boiled potatoes that have been sliced a in thick I serve this with some homemade smoked sausage from Four Oaks Farms over in Lexington SC Enjoy

My family loved this recipe. I cooked the bacon with the ground beef and added the rest. I omitted the oregano (personal taste). The recipe is perfect as is. Next time, I will try 2 lbs of beef as I prefer more meat.
