Baker's Chocolate Brownies


  • 2 1-ounce squares Baker's unsweetened chocolate
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 2/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts


Melt chocolate with shortening over low heat-a double boiler works better for this. Mix flour with baking powder and salt. Beat eggs well; then gradually beat in the sugar. Blend in the chocolate mixture and vanilla. Add flour mixture and blend well, stir in nuts. Spread in a greased 8-inch square pan. Bake 350: for 25 minutes (for moist, chewy brownies); or about 30 minutes or until tester comes out clean when inserted in the center of the brownies (this will be cakelike brownies). Cool in the pan, then cut into squares. Makes about 20 brownies. NOTE: Recipe may be doubled, bake in a greased 9x13" pan at 350: for 25-30 minutes. Makes about 40 brownies.
