I am not familiar with the history or tradition of Hoppin' John, in fact, before I came across this Southern Hoppin' John recipe I had never heard of it. I'm happy I found it. It truly is a tasty, comforting dish now that the weather is turning cold. Don't let the recipe intimidate you, it is well written and easy to follow and well worth having to remember to start soaking the dried black-eyed peas the night before. Absolutely serve it with hot sauce and cornbread on the side. YUM
