Oktoberfest Sweet & Sour Red Cabbage

Whether your heritage is German or not, you're sure to love this delicious, traditional German side dish. Follow this easy recipe for Oktoberfest Sweet & Sour Red Cabbage and see how tasty cabbage can be. Made with onions, apples and vinegar, this is one of the most unexpected cabbage side dishes you'll find, but it's also one of the most flavorful. Get ready to be wowed by this great recipe that's perfect for Oktoberfest celebrations.


  • 1 head red cabbage (approximately 2 lbs)
  • 4 tablespoons onions, finely chopped
  • 3 tablespoons butter or 4 slices bacon
  • 2 apples, sliced, OR 1 cup applesauce (more if unsweetened)
  • 1/4 cup vinegar OR 1/2 cup red wine OR 2 tbsp honey and 2 tbsp vinegar
  • salt and pepper, to taste


  1. Core, shred and soak cabbage in cold water.
  2. Meanwhile, saute onion in butter or bacon.
  3. Drain cabbage (leave moist), and simmer for 10 minutes.
  4. Add sauteed onion/butter (or bacon), apples (or applesauce), vinegar (or wine or honey/vinegar) and season to taste. Mix well.
  5. Cover and simmer for 1 hour and 20 minutes. Add boiling water if necessary.
