Lump Crab Cake Burgers with Tartar Sauce

Crab cakes are my weakness. I love to order them when I’m out to eat. I get them every time that I see them on a menu. Crab meat is so delicate and flavorful. It blends in perfectly with the breadcrumbs and other ingredients to make the most delicious little cakes. I thought I’d had just about every version of crab cakes out there, until one day I saw a crabcake burger on a restaurant menu, and it changed the game forever. I couldn’t get over how delicious they were. Now I don’t even wait until I’m out to eat. I make them right in the comfort of my own home whenever I want. Which is pretty often. If you’re a crab cake fan, I hope when you give this a try, it further deepens your love for crab cakes.

Ingredients

  • For the Crab Cakes
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) canola oil
  • 1/2 red bell pepper, diced small
  • 1/2 onion, diced small
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 lb (454 g) lump crab meat
  • 1/2 cup (54 g) Italian seasoned breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) mayonnaise
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) Worcestershire Sauce
  • 2 tablespoons (28 g) butter
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) olive oil
  • 4 brioche burger buns

  • For the Tartar Sauce
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) mayonnaise
  • 1/2 lemon, juiced
  • 2 tablespoons (30 g) dill pickle relish
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • Optional Toppings
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • Red Onion

DIRECTIONS

  1. For the crab cakes, in a small skillet, heat the canola oil over medium-high heat. Add the bell pepper and onion and lightly season with a small pinch of salt and pepper. Cook the vegetables for about 5 minutes, or until they are soft, stirring about every 30 seconds. When they’re done, take them off the heat and let them cool.

  2. In a large bowl, add the crab meat, breadcrumbs, mayonnaise, egg, Worcestershire sauce and cooled peppers and onions. Season with salt and pepper.

  3. Form the crab mixture into four equal-sized patties. In a large skillet, heat the butter and olive oil over medium high-heat. Add the crab patties and cook them until they’re browned on both sides. This should take 5 to 7 minutes.

  4. To make the tartar sauce, combine all the ingredients in a bowl and mix well.

  5. Next, split each brioche bun and place some tartar sauce on the bottom bun. How much is totally up to you. Then add the crab patty on top of the tartar sauce. Add whatever additional toppings you’d like and close the burger with the top bun. Serve warm.
