Basic Beef Macaroni

Basic Beef Macaroni is a surefire meal that never disappoints. With just five simple ingredients, this ground beef and macaroni casserole recipe is too easy to make! Enjoy with or without cheese for different variations!


Variation: Add lots of Cheddar cheese on top and melt under a broiler.

Cooking MethodCasserole


  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 can tomatoes
  • 1 pound macaroni
  • salt and pepper, to taste


  1. Brown the ground beef and onions in a skillet. Meanwhile, cook the macaroni. Rinse and drain when done.
  2. Add the can of tomatoes to the browned beef mixture and heat through.
  3. Mix the macaroni with the ground beef/tomato mixture. Add salt and pepper to taste; serve.

This is comfort food that is easy to make when dinner has to be ready in a hurry. I like that this can be prepared without having to bake anything in the oven. I would use lean ground beef in this recipe so that it wouldn't have to be rinsed, when draining off the fat after cooking. Crushed tomatoes would work well in this dish. The macaroni should be cooked al dente. Stirring in grated parmesan cheese into the mixture would be delicious.

We always add chunked longhorn style cheese to the mixture and put it in the oven long enough to melt some of the cheese. Also, if you want to kick it up a bit, instead of canned tomatoes, use canned tomatoes with green chili's, store brand works very well. You can add chili powder. Or if you want a more Italian flavor, use Italian spiced canned tomatoes and then add more Italian seasoning. A million ways to change up this basic recipe.
