    Indian Yellow Split Peas

    Ingredients

    • 1/2 cup yellow split peas
    • 5 cups water
    • 1/2 tsp turmeric
    • 1 tsp salt
    • 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper
    • 2 Tbsp ghee
    • 2 Tbsp chopped onions
    • 1 clove garlic, minced
    • 1 tsp cumin seeds

    Instructions

    Yield: 4 Servings. Combine peas, water, turmeric, salt and pepper in a pot over medium heat and cook for about 30 minutes, or until peas have disintegrated and sauce has thickened to desired consistency. Stir every 10 mins or so and watch to make sure peas don't boil over. Remove from heat when done. Heat ghee in a small frying pan and add onions, garlic, and cumin. Saute until onions and garlic are just turning brown. Pour tarka into the dal. Mix well, cover and leave for 10 mins. Serve with steamed rice or roti.
