This recipe looks a lot like the standard American version, but with some creative add ins like cheese, olives, and celery. My german grandmother would always use cubes of beef and maybe a little onion, and it would stew almost all day on low, making its own amazing gravy. There were never any other vegetables in it. She would serve it atop homemade spaetzle noodles. Great tasty comfort food, but not authentic.

Goulash has become such a catch-all term over the years and while this probably isn't technically a goulash, it's still incredibly tasty and easy to prepare. My wife and son love olives, so this is an ideal dish for them. My preferences run elsewhere, so if I were making this just for myself, I'd probably substitute corn for the olives. This is really a wonderful comfort food to make up when the weather is cooler.

Ann says it this way, "Its my dads recipe, and hes German, so Im just going to call this German Goulash," and that's about right. Although this isn't a typical German goulash ... omit the olives and cheese and add paprika and green peppers instead ... this one does look like it would taste delicious. And, I'm all for things that are delicious and fast!
