Nothing quite like a really good Bee Sting Cake (Bienenstich). Although traditionally a yeast cake is used in Germany, I love that this one is just a regular cake ... so much quicker and easier to make. The one I normally make uses a honey/almond topping that's added to the cake right towards the end of the baking time. The method used in this recipe adds the topping before baking. Sounds a lot easier. I'll be trying that next time for sure. A quick tip for those who'd like this just a tad quicker. Instead of filling with the custard, use some stiffly beaten, sweetened whipped cream instead. Super delicious as well.

That doesn't look like any Bienenstich (Bee sting cake) I ever ate in Germany.
