Hobo Cake

For the ultimate easy cake recipe that is also super cheap, try this Hobo Cake. With only a few ingredients it truly is the essence of budget friendly. Plus vary up the flavors by adding nuts or other dried fruits.

Ingredients
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups cold water
  • 2 tablespoons (heaping) creamed shortening
  • 1 pound seeded raisins
  • 1 teaspoon (heaping) baking soda
  • 1/2 salt
  • 3 cups all purpose flour
Instructions
  1. Mix sugar, water, shortening, and raisins and boil for 5 mins.
     
  2. Cool mixture You can put into refrigerator until cooled.
     
  3. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
     
  4. Dissolve the baking into a small mixture that was prepared above. Then add to the cooled mixture.
     
  5. Next, add all dry ingredients and mix well. Put into a well greased tube pan and bake for 1 hour. 

 

Notes

You can add nuts and dried fruits for a variety taste. Great when sliced warm and drizzled with honey or maple syrup.

Dang...how in the heck do some of you make it through the day?!

What can i use in place of shortening since i don't use or have any?

You think it might have something to do with what it says to do in #1???

#4 is confusing. Desssolve in what "small mixture?

I think they mean "baking soda" dissolved into a small amount of the water, shortening, sugar and raisin mixture.

What does Item #4 of instructions mean? Please explain it! Are we supposed to make 2 of the same mixture? Does anyone preview these recipes before putting on web site for viewing by the world?
