Old fashioned Sponge Candy

Ingredients
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup dark corn syrup
  • 1 Tbsp cider vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp baking soda
Instructions

Heat sugar, corn syrup, and vinegar to boiling in 2-qt sauce pan over medium heat, stirring constantly, until sugar is dissolved. Boil without stirring, until candy thermometer registers 300F. Remove from heat; stir in baking soda quickly and thoroughly. Pour mixture in ungreased baking pan,13x9x2 inches. Do not spread. Cool; break candy into pieces. Serve as candy or crush and sprinkle over ice cream, pudding, or fruit. Makes 1 lb candy (5 cups crushed).
