Old Fashioned Nutmeg Cake

Ingredients
  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3 eggs, beaten
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tsps nutmeg
  • 1 cup buttermilk or sour milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
Instructions

Cream sugar, butter, and shortening. Add eggs; beat well. Sift together dry ingredients. Add to shortening mixture alternately with buttermilk or sour milk. Add vanilla. Bake at 350 degrees. Bake 2 (9 inch) layers for 25 minutes. Bake 1 (13x9 inch) pan for 30-40 minutes. Frosting 6 Tbsp. melted butter 2/3 cup packed brown sugar 1/4 cup cream or canned milk dash of salt 1 cup shredded coconut 1/2 tsp. vanilla Mix all ingredients. Spread on hot cake and put under broiler for a few minutes until golden color. Watch carefully.
