American-Style Goulash

This American-Style Goulash is an adapted version of a traditional Hungarian dish. You can't go wrong with ground beef and macaroni noodles! This easy goulash recipe is a low maintenance meal that's sure to win over the whole family.

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1/2 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 jar (28-ounces) spaghetti sauce
  • 8 ounces uncooked elbow macaroni
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon garlic salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

  1. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a 2 1/2-quart baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.
  2. In a large skillet, brown ground beef, onion, and green bell pepper over medium-high heat 6 to 8 minutes, or until beef is no longer pink, stirring frequently. Drain off excess liquid.
  3. Add spaghetti sauce, macaroni, water, garlic salt, and black pepper; mix well.
  4. Pour mixture into baking dish. Cover and bake 25 minutes.
  5. Uncover; top with mozzarella cheese and bake 15 to 20 minutes more, or until cheese has melted and casserole is heated through.

BobH1933 17 Jan, 2012 Where's the paprika? Use beef stew meat instead. It would have to be braised though to be tender.

Just looking at this recipe I suggest renaming it Italian Goulash. Not at all American! Spaghetti Sauce? It may be okay, but doesn't interest me as American Goulash. My mother cooked American Goulash and hers may be different but it's what I consider American 1 12 lbs ground beef 1 lge onion chopped 1 28 oz. can diced tomatoes 16 oz pkg. large shell macaroni 1. cook macaroni as pkg directions specify 2. brown ground beef and onion in skillet 3. add tomatoes to beef mixture, add seasoning 4. simmer about 30mins 5. combine with shell macaroni 6. adjust seasonings to taste. 7. all done on stove top.
