German Kielbasa Soup Recipe

This always-hearty soup recipe is sure to warm your tummy. Our German kielbasa soup recipe is the made in a slow cooker and requires just 15 minutes of prep! Ideal for a chilly winter or fall day, this soup recipe can be cooked over 4 or 8 hours, making it the perfect set it and forget it meal on a busy day.

From the Chef: Kielbasa is a signature ingredient in many German dishes, and I love how the heartiness of the meat interacts with the various veggies in this slow cooker supper. There's very little prep work that needs to be done, making this a great dish to start in the morning before you go to work, so you come home to a fully cooked dinner.

  • 1 pound dried brown lentils, rinsed and drained
  • 10 cups beef broth
  • 1 (14-ounce) can fire-roasted diced tomatoes
  • 1/2 pound grated carrots
  • 2 stalks celery, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/2 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 cups cubed kielbasa
  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
  • Salt and pepper (optional)


  1. Place the lentils in a 6-quart slow cooker with the broth, tomatoes, carrots, celery, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, hot pepper sauce, bay leaf, parsley, garlic powder, pepper, and nutmeg. Stir to combine.

  2. Add in the kielbasa and mix.

  3. Cover and cook for 4 to 5 hours on high or 8 to 10 hours on low until the lentils are cooked.

  4. Add in the red wine vinegar. Add salt and pepper, if desired. Remove the bay leaf, ladle into bowls, and serve.

This hearty "warm you to the bones" soup is so savory and rich! Using kielbasa not only saves a lot of prep time since it is precooked, but it infuses everything with a nice smokiness. You could use any sausage you like, and there are even some lighter chicken and turkey kielbasa available these days. The vinegar at the end is a nice touch - it sort of cuts through the richness just a bit!
