There's nothing better than fresh, homemade applesauce to really welcome the fall in your home and onto your plate. The best part about making it yourself is being able to control all the variables from the variety of spices used, to the consistency, to the flavor. Pro tip: Do you like your applesauce more tart than sugary? Try modifying this recipe by using mainly Granny Smith apples and only 1/8 cup brown sugar. Enjoy!

Cooking Time30 min

Ingredients

  • 6 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into 8 slices per apple
  • 1 cup apple juice or apple cider
  • 2 strips of lemon peel
  • juice of 1 lemon
  • 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 Star Anise
  • Note: Use a combination of Granny Smith, Fuji and Gala apples for a sweet and tart applesauce.

Instructions

  1. In a large pot combine the apples, apple juice or cider, lemon peel, lemon juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, cinnamon stick and Star Anise. Mix together the ingredients.

  2. Cook over medium heat for 25-30 minutes until apples have broken down, stirring a few times during cooking.

  3. Remove the lemon peel, cinnamon stick, and the Star Anise.

  4. Working in batches puree the apple mixture in a food processor until smooth.

My mom makes delicious homemade applesauce that our family just loves! One tip I have learned from her to share with all of you is to let the apples do the work first before you add all of the sweeteners! Usually the apples are sweet enough that you may not need any (or as much) sugar and other ingredients. Also, if you have plenty of time, try using a slow cooker on low heat for the most tender apples!

This was delicious! It's definitely worth the effort to make it yourself

There really is nothing in the world quite as yummy as homemade applesauce. Personally, I like my applesauce a little chunky so I'll usually only puree half and mix in the other half of apples afterward. But, before all of the mixings happen...my apples are cooked with raisins so they'll get super plump and juicy. I don't think I've ever used Star Anise before...what kind of flavor does it bring to the applesauce?

This was very yummy! Homemade apple sauce is so much better than store bought.

THIS WAS SO GOOD! It was the perfect sweetness and consistency.

This applesauce had a great flavor- almost like a light apple pie filling! I like extra-chunky applesauce, so next time I will probably add big chunks of apple.

This sauce was a little too sweet for my tastes, but I loved the texture! Next time I make it, i'll probably include more granny smith apples to increase the tartness.

THIS WAS SO YUMMY. I love applesauce so much and this did not disappoint. It had a yummy sweet yet tart taste, almost like pie.

I really enjoyed this applesauce! It wasn't too sweet and tasted so much more fresh than the store bought variety. I would totally make this again!

I love applesauce!! It is actually one of my favorite foods ever! There is something so wonderful about going to the apple orchard and using the apples you picked to make applesauce in the fall. I really like the texture of this particular applesauce! @nashmeow has it right when she says it's the perfect combo of smooth and chunky. YUM!

Homemade applesauce recipes are always so much better than anything you can buy in a store, and this recipe is no exception. The applesauce is just the right combination of sweet and tart, and the texture is just right - not too smooth, just chunky enough. A new staple in my home!
