My Grandmother made fried apples a lot. This was basically the recipe she used. She always had a jar of bacon drippings in the fridge for flavoring dishes, as do I. A little bit of drippings adds a ton of flavor and the key to all things is moderation. She lived to be 87 years old.

I worked at Cracker Barrel and there is no bacon drippings in their fried apples or apple dumplings

I would like to see a clone of Cracker Barrel's Apple Dumplings. Please?? btw: Real butter has as much fat as bacon drippings.

mickied, please email me about the apple dumpling recipe. I have info for you

@leni - For this recipe, slice the apples into 1/2-inch slices. Hope this helps! - RecipeLion Editors

A good recipe will tell you how to chop apples, finger length? cubed? how wide? Strange it is not complete like that. It looks as if it is a healthy fingerlength.

Think I will use the butter, due to the bacon has a lot of fat

To answer your question Chef...... my family used butter or margarine not bacon drippings. Of course you can't have the heat too high when you melt it 'cause it will burn. Love fried apples!

any idea on what could be subsituted for the bacon fat?

This recipe was ok, to me the amount of bacon drippings needs to be reduced, all I could taste was the bacon.
