American Potato Salad is the first potato salad recipe I learned to make. I just love the blend of potatoes with mayonnaise dressing and all the added flavors. I could eat it for breakfast, lunch or dinner and goes well with toast bread. This is called heaven. Through the years I've seen many variations of the potato salad recipe but still I go back to this simple, old, reliable potato salad recipe.

Absolutely no sweet relish,,use dill pickles chopped up & a little shot of pickle juice or regular vinegar..i like it tart...

I use mayo instead of miracle whip & decrease the amount by 3/4 and add 1/4 cup of sour cream to it. makes it creamier tasting. I also use more boiled eggs. at least 3 or 4. Use Dill Relish instead of sweet pickles. I also cook package of Bacon until crispy. Reserve a little to garnish top of bowl. Add crumbled bacon to it and decorate top w reserved bacon and a little shredded Cheddar cheese.

I never thought about using bacon chopped up...i will try this this weekend...I bought a brisket & a full rack of ribs already cooked..yum-yum...Gotta attend a big car show, so i don't have time to cook..

I prefer to use half mayo and half Miracle Whip. Would probably use a little more of each in this recipe. It does sound like a good recipe. Will try it as soon as I get a chance.

I do not like pickles in potato salad.

I vote for this potato salad. The Mexican recipe lost me when it listed a hefty portion of chipotle peppers in adobo sauce. I bought those on two separate occasions, just to see if the first can was unusually HOT, but they were both the same. One recipe I saw said to layer an entire can of them in a crock pot along with the other ingredients. That's overload to the point of ruining an otherwise good dish.

I use green onions and I also add radishes to my salad.

Great recipe! Miracle whip gives it the zing and mustard seed is a great pick up.

Keep the Miracle Whip, leave out the celery seed, mustard optional. I have been making this recipe for years, got it from my mom, everyone I know loves it.

I hate, hate, hate Miracle WhipI make a mean potato salad & would never use the stuff!

I hate, hate, hate Mayonnaise and love, love, love, Miracle Whip! This is a great recipe just like you wrote it down. Quick, easy, everyone likes it .... what could be better!

Hello ettaarmell, I'm glad you enjoyed the recipe. Thanks for the comment!

this is a great recipe. miracle whip gives it just the rite taste. hellman's mayo is YUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello Lakelady, Thanks for your suggestions and comments.

Miracle Whip NOT. It's a miracle it's still for sale. Use REAL Mayo or don't bother making this at all.

Hellman's mayo tastes like I am drinking straight cooking oil....YUCK. Miracle Whip used to be the best until Kraft changed the formula.

ONLY Miracle Whip...Hellmann's is gross!!! Everybody that I know that eats potato salad can tell if you cheated and used Hellmann's.

OH NO MIRACLE WHIP NEVER! HELLMANNS AND NOOO MUSTARD!

The recipe looks ok except for one major item. Never, never use Miracle Whip.....use only Hellmann's or Best Foods (the same mayo). I was reared on this classic recipe, but it definitely doesn't taste like the 'classic' if you use an inferior grade like Miracle Whip.
