Greek Butter Cookies


  • 1 1/2 cup butter
  • 2 Tbl powdered sugar
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 3 1/2 cups flour (approx)
  • 1 pound powdered sugar
  • whole cloves


Heat oven to 275F. Cream butter till light and fluffy - add 2 Tbl. sugar and egg yolk, creaming well. Gradually add flour - just enough to make a soft dough you can shape with hands. Roll pieces size of a walnut, shaping into an "S". Insert one clove into center of eack cookie. Place on ungreased cookie sheet - bake at 275F for 45 minutes or until delicately brown (if baking two sheets at once, switch oven position halfway). Remove and let cool on pan 5 minutes. Sift a layer of powdered sugar over butcher paper, carefully transfer cookies to sugared paper. Sift more powdered sugar over cookies 1/4-inch thick. Let stand till cool. Store in an airtight container (the longer they sit, the better).
