Slow Cooked General Tso's Chicken

Slow Cooked General Tsos Chicken
Slow Cooked General Tsos Chicken

Slow Cooked General Tso's Chicken is a lazy cook's dream come true. This easy Chinese food-inspired recipe is ready in just a matter of hours, during which, you can leave everything be in the slow cooker to cook while you go about your business. When you come back to check on your meal, your chicken will be perfectly tender and marinated - almost ready to enjoy! All you have to do next is thicken the sauce and shred your chicken and your protein is ready to be eaten. Note that this recipe is slow cooked, and will have a much different texture than the restaurant version, which is normally fried. We recommend making the meal complete by serving your chicken over a bed of white and adding in some veggies of your choice!

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup canned chicken broth
  • 1 1/2 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 medium garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts

Instructions

  1. Spray slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray. Lay chicken breasts on bottom.

  2. Combine in a separate bowl, chicken broth, soy sauce, sugar, white wine vinegar, ginger, garlic clove and pepper flakes.

  3. Pour over chicken and cook 4-6 hours in slow cooker on low.

  4. When finished, take the chicken out of the slow cooker and cut into chunks. With the juice in the slow cooker, whisk in the cornstarch slowly to thicken the sauce.

  5. Return chicken to slow cooker and heat through.

The instructions include soy sauce in step 2 but it is not shown in the ingredients. I would like to make this tonight. Please advise as to the correct amount.

Chinese food is my favorite and I could probably eat it every day if given the chance...I'm thinking because I love all of the different veggies that just seem to work so perfectly together. General Tso's chicken is in my top 3, and I love the idea of making it in the slow cooker...but shouldn't it be reddish/orange in color? Well, either way, I think this would be yummy with some colorful veggies and I'm definitely going to give it a try!

This looks like such an easy recipe. And making it yourself you can control the amount of salt which is usually one of my problems with take out Chinese. Now I can make it myself. Thank you for the recipe.

I clicked on the picture of the food flowers after the video finished playing as they looked so beautiful. I would highly recommend all you food enthusiasts to try these interesting ideas as it is very rewarding. Here are some roses I made out of tomato skins. Simply peel the skin in one long peel and roll it up to make these roses.

What an interesting looking recipe. I like shredded chicken. You can do so much with it. I like it on sandwiches the next day as well. The sauce looks quite delicious with nice flavorings. I like trying Chinese dishes and this seems very easy. Im definitely going to give it a try.

Does anyone know how much soy sauce?

I think I would start with 2 Tablespoons go from there. You can always add more.

For a while there I was using my crock pot at least three times a week. My crazy work schedule would not allow me to make meals any other way. My husband finally put his food down telling me everything was tasting the same. It is time to pull out the crock pot again and see what comments I garnish with this dish.

For Chinese takeout I have only a couple of meals that I select and this is one of them. I joke with my family all the time about someone getting a job at the local Chinese takeout to steal their secret. If this is half as good as takeout, that will have to do.

LOVE the Chinese inspired flavors in this recipe. Ginger, garlic and chili and always good for our family and everyone really enjoyed this chicken slow cooker dish tonight. It is really simple to prepare, then I went about my day and this evening all I did was make a lovely crunchy salad fresh from the garden and dinner was ready!
