Beginner's Beef Stew

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pound stew meat, cubed
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 2 cups hot water
  • 15 ounces tomato sauce
  • 1 onion, coarsely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon basil
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 potatoes, cubed
  • 3 carrots, sliced
  • 2 celery ribs, sliced

Instructions

  1. Place meat, flour, salt and pepper in a paper bag and shake until coated.
     
  2. Heat oil in a skillet and brown meat on all sides.  Place meat cubes in a slow cooker, along with the water, tomato sauce, onion, basil, bay leaf, potatoes, carrots, and celry.  Stir, cover, and cook on low for 8 to 10 hours.
