Old School Molasses Cookies

Tis the season for some Old School Molasses Cookies! Use these sweet treats in unique Christmas gift baskets or just keep them for yourself.

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 3/4 cup molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • sugar


  1. Combine brown sugar, butter and shortening in electric mixer on medium speed till creamy.
  2. Add molasses and egg, continue beating till well mixed.
  3. Reduce speed to low, add flour, baking soda, spices and salt. Beat till well mixed.
  4. Cover and refrigerate for 1-2 hours until firm.
  5. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  6. Shape dough into 1 1/2 inch balls. Roll balls in sugar.
  7. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Flatten balls with glass dipped in sugar.
  8. Bake for 8-11 minutes until set.
