In the US 1 cup butter or margarine equals 1 cup Crisco plus 2 tablespoons water. You will get a softer, chewier cookie using Crisco, which is a vegetable shortening. Crisco also comes in butter flavor which is a plus!!

Can you recommend a UK substitute for crisco please?

Could someone answer my question, please? Are these cookies soft ot crisp? Thanks

I'm only guessing, but with the shortening and not butter I would guess they would be on the softer side.

My Mother used to make these for my Father who loved them when I was a child many years ago. As I recall they are on the soft side but rather chewey.

Instead of Crisco I will use 1/2 c (1 stk ) butter and about 5 tbsp flax seed. Add boiling water to molasses and add the baking soda and salt to flour.

Are these cookies crisp or soft? Thasnks
