Christmas Morning Breakfast Casserole

The perfect way to start Christmas is with a delicious breakfast. This casserole is so easy to make ahead that all you have to do is heat it up on Christmas morning for a warm, flavorful breakfast that the whole family will love. With bacon and Cheddar cheese in the mix, it's hard to go wrong with a breakfast casserole recipe as flavorful and hearty as this one. Worcestershire sauce and a dash of Tabasco kick up the spice factor in this breakfast bake without making it too overwhelming. Give this yummy casserole a try and you'll see why it's one of our favorite ways to start the day!

Serves: 12

Cooking Time: 1 hr

Ingredients
  • 1 stick butter, melted and divided
  • 16 slices white bread or challah, crusts removed
  • 16 slices very thinly sliced Canadian bacon or ham
  • 16 slices sliced cheddar cheese
  • 6 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 2 4 drops Tabasco sauce, to taste
  • Fresh ground black pepper
  • 3 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup each diced red and green bell pepper
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped green onion
  • 2 cups lightly crushed corn flakes
Instructions
  1. Melt butter and brush inside a 9 x 13-inch casserole liberally with some of it.
     
  2. Assemble 8 “sandwiches” of bread, meat, cheese, bread and fit them into the casserole in one layer. Brush the top layer with some of the melted butter. 
     
  3. In a medium bowl, beat the eggs with the Worcestershire sauce, salt, mustard and peppers.  Whisk in the milk and pour over the bread layers in the casserole.  Sprinkle the top with red and green peppers and green onion.  Wrap with plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 1 hour or overnight to absorb the custard mixture. 
     
  4. When ready to bake, preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Combine the remaining butter (you may have to re-melt) with the crushed cereal. Sprinkle evenly over the top of the casserole and bake for 1 hour until the center is set. Let stand for at least 10 minutes before cutting into squares to serve.

What a beautiful recipe this is...perfect for any occasion and especially on the holidays when you want to impress everyone with your fancy cooking skills. Corn flakes are wonderful to use as breading and I'm sure it'll really enhance this deliciousness without a hitch. I've never tried Challah bread but will definitely make an effort now.

This dish sounds divine! I want to make it for dinner because of the veggies. We love having brinner as we call it, and this will be a delicious switch in the menu. I love that it has vegetables, and peppers are our favorite. I see us using this recipe more than just on Christmas morning.

I like breakfast casseroles on holidays, and some times for dinner. I'm not sure about this one with so much bread, and not many eggs. We'll try it once as a weeknight dinner.

I'm always looking for a good Christmas morning casserole but this would be good at any time! I like Canadian bacon but I do have a vegetarian eater in the house, so do you think that could be eliminated and the casserole still tasty? I could also make her a separate one with the vegetarian bacon instead. Also, where do you find Challah bread? Do you have to go to a bakery for that? I feel like I don't see it much.

This recipe looks really good and it's great to be able to have a yummy and hearty breakfast ready to pop in the oven on Christmas morning, or any morning really! I would use black forest ham instead of the Canadian bacon I think (we call it peameal bacon). I'mm thinking of substituting the corn flakes on top for stuffing instead? Either way sounds totally delicious!

We will have a large group for Christmas and this sounds like the right dish for the younger crowd. They will like the little zip from the Tabasco and spices. It is a great dish to look at so I will be happy to set it on the table. (I will experiment with it first to see if any adjustments need to be made.) I am sure this will be a big hit, with rave ratings. I give it 5 thumbs up just from the photo and recipe.

I wasn't sure what to expect with the bread in here, but this casserole is surprisingly good! A little bit of kick, loved the crunch from the cereal topping as a contrast point.

The flavors in this casserole really did remind me of Christmas morning!

The bacon must be pre-cooked before adding to the casserole. Unless you like semi-raw bacon and a greasy casserole.

The recipe sounds easy and delicious, but as one of the previous comments asked, and didn't get an answer, is the bacon cooked or raw before cooking the casserole?

Canadian Bacon is very similar to ham. It is already cooked when you purchase it (smoked?) and is usually available at the deli counter or in packages where deli meats are sold. It does not need to be cooked before-hand. Treat it as you would ham.

What is Canadian Back Bacon?

The recipe shows the bacon cooked, but in the directions you say to putbr the bacon on top of bread and than cheese. What is the bacon cooked or not cooked?br Thank You'br Annette Foxbr
