  • For the Cake
  • 1 1/4 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup oatmeal
  • Egg Mixture
  • 1/2 cup softened butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • Dry Ingredients
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 1/2 cup sifted flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • store bought white frosting


  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease 2 round 8 inch cake pans with cooking spray.

  2. In a large bowl, combine the oatmeal with boiling water. Cover with saran wrap and let sit 20 minutes. In a separate bowl, beat butter until creamy. Add in beaten eggs, both sugars, and vanilla. Add to oatmeal mixture.

  3. Sift flour in a bowl. Add baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and brown sugar.

  4. Add dry ingredients to Oatmeal mixture. Stir to combine and pour into greased baking pans.

  5. Bake for 50-55 minutes. Let cool.

  6. Spread frosting over one layer of cake, add second cake layer and top with remaining frosting. Serve warm.

Fabulous! My grandma sometimes makes a cake that's very similar to this, and she puts nuts in it!

I had to do a double take when I saw the picture of this looks just like a giant iced oatmeal cookie to me. And, it's a much healthier way to enjoy cake (which is a weakness of mine anyway) without the guilt. Can you imagine this in cupcake form filled with a cream cheese icing and a touch of ginger? Omg...yes, please!

I would love to make this, but in the directions it refers to adding Both Sugars when mixing the ingredients for the Egg Mixture. But it only lists white sugar in the Egg Mixture ingredients.

Look in the dry ingredients, first listing, brown sugar. Both sugars are represented in the recipe.

This is a good why to eat your oatmeal for all those oatmeal lovers out there or for something different than just the plain. I bet you can add some fruit to give it a different flavor too. There is a video along with the instructions to make it easier and I like that you can add your own choice of frosting. Thanks.

I have this recipe from way back when. My recipe calls for raisins which I always I use. My recipe calls for a 9 X 13-inch pan. It also has a cooked frosting to use and calls for coconut and pecans in the frosting. Delicious!!! I saved this recipe and will make it soon.

I love this Vintage Oatmeal Cake recipe. It is so easy and quick to make, and the ingredients are things you have on hand. If you don't have store bought white frosting, you can always whip up a quick cream frosting. It kind of reminds me of the Oatmeal Creme Pies I enjoyed as a child. This recipe is a must have at any time of the day.

I can't wait to make this cake. I would definitely consider it for breakfast we eat coffee cake for breakfast, don't we?! I love old recipes from scratch because you know they are tried and true and you don't have to deal with problems, like cake mixes that are smaller than the original recipe calls for. This cake will be delicious with coffee in the morning, or with milk later in the day,

I would love to make this, but the directions refer to butter and there is no butter in the list of ingredients?? Is there butter and how much?

My husband and I love store bought oatmeal cakes, but for the size, the price is outrageous. I was so glad to find the vintage oatmeal cake recipe.
