Wartime Creamed Chip Beef

A classic beef recipe that comes together in minutes, Wartime Creamed Chip Beef is great when you need to make something on-the-go. Also known as SOS Beef, Same Ole Stuff, it's comfort food that will have a special place in your heart. Serve over toast or with some biscuits and you'll have yourself a hearty meal.

  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons peeled, chopped yellow onion
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 2 cups hot milk
  • 1/2 pound lb. dried chipped beef, or .75 pound of ground beef, cooked and drained.
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • Black pepper, freshly ground, to taste
  • few drops of Tabasco
  • 1 tablespoon dry sherry (optional)
  1. In heavy saucepan, melt the butter and saute the yellow onion until clear.
  2. Stir in the flour with a whisk and then the hot milk, stirring all the time until the mixture thickens.
  3. When the mixture is thick, add the remaining ingredients and heat for a moment. Serve over toast.

I like to add a drop or two of Liq. Smoke.

Dad had another name for it in the Air Force, S**t on a Shingle! LOL

Took the words right out of my comment :)

I've been eating this for years and never thought to add onion, hot sauce or sherry. It's also good on a fully baked potato. I definitely will try this recipe next time.

bamaginny ... This is also good on mashed potatoes or egg noodles. If you would like a little change ... Use ground sausage and eat over scrambled eggs and biscuits..... That's the way the served it when I was in the USAF back in the early 70's. more commonly known as SOS.
