Cuban Picadillo with Potatoes

This unique Cuban dish is surprisingly easy to make and is full of affordable ingredients. This dish will serve a crowd and you'll even have leftovers for lunch the next day.

  • 3 potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 2 medium onions, chopped
  • 1 large green pepper, diced
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 2 pounds ground round
  • 6 small tomatoes (or 1 8-ounce can)
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 1/4 cup pimiento-stuffed green olives, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon capers
  • 1/2 cup red wine, tomato juice or bouillon
  1. Brown potatoes in oil, drain and set aside. Brown onions and green pepper in olive oil (add more oil if necessary).
  2. Add meat, chopped tomatoes, salt, garlic and black pepper and stir frequently to break up and large chunks.
  3. Add potatoes and remaining ingredients and simmer slowly until meat is tender and flavors have developed, about 30 minutes. Serve with white rice.

This Cuban Picadillo with Potaoes is very similar to our own picadillo recipe. Ours is also made of ground pork or beef, then mixed with potatoes, onions, garlic, black pepper, salt. That simple. This recipe has green olives and capers. Well, why not. Olives and capers are readily available in the grocery store. I want to try it on this new recipe. I actually like picadilo. My mom cooks it so well.
