Crusted Meatloaf

Always pleasing to the crowd this is a great recipe for meatloaf. Whether feeding the whole family or just your significant other this Crusted Meatloaf is savory and delicious.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cup hamburger or ground beef
  • 1 egg, slightly beaten
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons chopped onion
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cup buttered bread cubes

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
     
  2. Mix all ingredients together.
     
  3. Form into loaf and gently press 1 1/2 cups buttered bread cubes into top of loaf. 
     
  4. Bake at 350 degrees F for 1 hour. Cool slightly and serve.

Comfort food is always welcome on the dinner table. This is a basic meatloaf recipe that can be adapted to suit personal tastes. When making this, I would use lean ground beef. I would also add sage, minced garlic, and ground mustard for enhanced flavor. Serve this main dish with mashed potatoes and green beans, and dinner is complete.

I happen to really love meatloaf. As a rule, I usually top mne with either ketchup or a brown-sugar barbeque sauce topping. Sometimes I top it with bacon. I have never thought to top it with breadcrumbs though. I bet it's delicious! It might be nice to stir in some herbs into the buttered breadcrumbs for extra flavour. I also thought that it would be nice to substitute garlic butter for regular butter in the crumbs for added zip. Has anyone ever had the crumbs brown too quickly? Do you think you could tent it in foil if that happens? This looks like an awesome recipe.

Meatloaf is a family favorite in our home. I usually top it with a brown sugar and catsup sauce. Our middle child is not a fan of catsup and brown sugar, so this will be the perfect recipe to try for her.
