Copycat Tarheel BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich

This is a copycat recipe of the original Tar-heel BBQ Restaurant classic pulled pork sandwich. It's moist, tangy and slow cooked to perfection. Slow cooker recipes for pulled pork are simply the best way to enjoy this savory BBQ. Enjoy the special homemade BBQ sauce and country cole slaw side for a complete meal.

Ingredients

  • --For BBQ Sauce:
  • 1 pint cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 tablespoon onion powder
  • 2 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 can (6 ounce) tomato paste
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1 tablespoon ground black pepper
  • --For the Pulled Pork:
  • 2 1/2 pound pork shoulder
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. For BBQ Sauce:

  2. Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl and whisk until well blended; set aside.

  3. For Pulled Pork:

  4. Place pork shoulder in 6 quart slow cooker. Sprinkle with seasonings and top with water. Cook on high for one hour then reduce temperature to low for 5 hours.

  5. Remove pork shoulder and “pull” pork into shreds. Return to slow cooker. Add BBQ sauce and cook on high for remaining hour of cook time. Serve on a bun, with coleslaw atop, or on the side. Enjoy!
