Ground Beef and Macaroni with Bechamel Sauce

Ingredients

  • 16 oz. large elbow macaroni
  • 1 1/4 lbs. ground beef
  • 1 chopped onion
  • black pepper and salt, to taste
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce
  • butter
  • grated cheddar cheese, to cover top

Instructions

Fry onion in butter until onions are dark yellow. Add ground beef and stir until beef is browned. Add pepper and salt. Then add tomato sauce and simmer for 5 minutes. Cook macaroni according to package directions. WHITE SAUCE 4 tablespoons butter 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour 3 1/2 - 4 cups milk 1 egg, beaten black pepper and salt, to taste Add flour to butter in saucepan and cook until golden. Add milk and stir on medium heat until thick. Remove from heat. Add salt and pepper to the beaten egg and add to white sauce. Keep stirring it for awhile. Add cooked, drained macaroni to the white sauce. Spread half the macaroni and sauce mixture in the bottom of a baking pan and cover with the prepared meat mixture. Add the rest of the macaroni and sauce mixture and sprinkle the top with grated cheese. Bake at 250 degrees F for 40 minutes, then broil for 3-5 minutes until the top is golden.
