Homemade Carnival Corn Dogs

Instead of waiting for a summer festival or buying a box of frozen corn dogs, the American favorite can be made year-round in the comfort of your home. These Homemade Carnival Corn Dogs taste just like the batter-coated dogs you remember. Cooking them in a Dutch oven filled with oil makes them golden brown and just crispy enough. Serve these homemade corn dogs at your next cookout, and your guests will be impressed by the DIY carnival food.

Cooking Time5 min

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour, sifted before measuring
  • 2/3 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 2 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoon solid vegetable shortening
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 8 hot dogs
  • vegetable oil for deep-frying
  • 8 wooden skewers

Instructions

  1. Heat 3-inches of oil in a Dutch oven to 375 degrees F.

  2. Combine flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder and salt in a mixing bowl. Add shortening and blend until mixture is crumbly. Add egg and milk; mix lightly.

  3. Pat hot dogs dry. Coat each one as evenly as possible with batter, holding the hot dogs with tongs and spreading the batter with a small knife.

  4. Add batter-coated dogs to Dutch oven and cook until golden, 4 to 5 minutes.

  5. Serve at once, with or without inserting skewers through bottom, as desired.
