Better Than Takeout Chicken Chow Mein

Ingredients

  • 4 pound fryer chicken, cut up
  • 2 cup water
  • 2 large white onions, chopped
  • 2 cup celery, diagonally sliced
  • 1/4 cup flour or cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1 can (16-ounce) bean sprouts, drained
  • 1 can (6-ounce) bamboo shoots, optional
  • 1 can (6-ounce) water chestnuts, drained and sliced
  • 3 tablespoon molasses
  • chow mein noodles
  • toasted slivered almonds

Instructions

  1. Place chicken with water, onions and celery in slow cooker. Cover and cook on Low for 8 to 10 hours. One hour before serving, turn to High.
     
  2. Remove chicken; bone and cut up meat into bite-size pieces. Return to slow cooker.
     
  3. Combine flour with soy sauce and stir into slow cooker with bean sprouts, bamboo shoots, water chestnuts and molasses. Stir well until thickened. Taste for seasoning.
     
  4. Turn to Low until ready to serve, up to 4 hours.
     
  5. Serve over chow mein noodles or hot fluffy rice. Sprinkle with toasted almonds.
