Molasses Sugar Cookies

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup vegetable shortening (no substitutions)
  • 2 cup flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon powdered cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon powdered ginger
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

Melt shortening in a 3 or 4 quart saucepan over low heat and let cool. Add sugar, molasses, and egg, and beat well. Sift together flour soda, spices, and salt. Add to shortening mixture. Mix well and chill in refrigerator, covered with clear plastic wrap. When firm, form into 1 inch balls, roll in granulated sugar, and place on greased cookie sheet, about 2 inches apart. Bake at 375 degrees for 8-10 minutes. Cool for 1-2 minutes and remove to cooling rack. Cookies will be soft, firm as they cool.
