With a corn flake bottom and a top layer of cinnamon apples, this dessert bar recipe is magnificent. These are a great little treat that the family will love. Why bake an apple pie when you can make Michigan's Apple Bars?

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 egg, separated
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 5 cup apples, thinly sliced
  • 1 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 2/3 cup corn flake crumbs
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • Water to thin
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

  2. Combine flour, salt, and sugar. Cut in shortening. Put egg yolk in a measuring cup and add milk to make 2/3 cup. (Set aside egg white for later.)

  3. Add this to the shortening mix and shape into a ball.

  4. Divide dough in half and roll out half of the dough. Put in an ungreased jelly roll pan. Top with filling.

  5. Roll out other half of dough and put on top of filling. Pinch all edges together.

  6. Beat egg white slightly and brush it on the top crust. Bake until you are sure the apples are done (35 minutes?) and crust is golden.

  7. For glaze, mix powdered sugar, lemon juice and water well and drizzle over bars as soon as they come from oven. With the back of a spoon, lightly spread the glaze to coat evenly. Glaze while hot.
