This is one of those hearty fill - you - up recipes that are perfect for a cold winter's night. It warms you up right to the bone. It has such a great flavor that you would never know how cheap it really is to make! If you aren't a big fan of lentils, you could use navy beans or split peas and it would be equally yummy!

I have been looking for a lentil recipe, the vinegar cinched it. My grandmother from Vienna made this and it is healthy and filling. Thankyou, I will make it this week.

Yes! I love a good "one pot wonder" soup that is rich in flavor and hardy. This Slow Cooker German Soup satisfies ever thing you make soup for. I don't normally cook German food but I love Kielbasa and lentils and it seemed like all the ingredients were a good combination of flavors. Turns out they are. The soup is wonderful. I added the apple cider vinegar at the end, it was great.

This soup/ stew was delicious! I love using my slow cooker. It's one of my favorite kitchen items. I followed the recipe for the most part. I used a chicken apple sausage made in our grocery store. I also added about a half cup of molasses. My grandmother put molasses in everything. The molasses helped get that deep, rich brown color. Those were the only changes I made. It was really good. It makes quite a bit so I froze half of it for a dish to take on short notice. Wondering what others paired with this and also, what type of beer?

I love german food and I love lentils, so this recipe is perfect for me! I might use some oktoberfest sausage or bratworst (cooked of course) to make it a bit more german. I'd also like to try this on the stovetop rather than in a slow-cooker as I find vegetables don't always cook evenly that way. It would be great to come home to this meal at the end of a long day at work though! Some nice bread or a salad would make this the perfect fall or winter dinner! Yum!

I LOVE a good slow cooker soup, and this German Lentil Soup sounds like it would be wunderbar! I'm wondering about the hot sauce ... not sure how German this addition is, but the nutmeg surely is! For a bit of variation and added color, instead of grating the carrots, adding them as thickly cut slices is a great alternative. I love to add a tablespoon of vinegar to my bowl whenever I have a lentil soup, but haven't tried using apple cider vinegar. I'll do that next time. BTW, my Oma used to add a tablespoon of honey to hers. I'm curious if anyone else knows about using honey instead of vinegar. I always thought it a bit odd )
