Scrumptious Monte Cristo Sandwich

Stop searching for great grilled cheese recipes because it doesn't get any better than the Scrumptious Monte Cristo Sandwich! This sandwich combines the worlds two best comfort foods, grilled cheese sandwiches and French toast, all in one bite.

Notes

The method for making this sandwich parts ways with the others in this book for two reasons: First, you slice rather than grate the cheese. That’s because dipping the sandwiches in the egg mixture is a messy affair, and if the cheese is grated, you’ll end up with more cheese in the egg mixture than on your sandwich. Second, there’s no reason to butter the bread. You will, however, add butter to the pan so that the egg-coated bread won’t stick and also so that the sandwiches have plenty of flavor.

Yields4 Sandwiches

Ingredients

  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/5 cup milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 8 sandwich-size slices brioche, egg bread, challah, or white bread
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 4 (1-ounce) slices cooked turkey
  • 8 ounces Emmentaler or Swiss cheese, cut into 16 thin slices
  • 4 (1-ounce) slices ham
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup strawberry jam (or use cherry, apricot, or any other jam you like)
  • Confectioners' sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  1. In a shallow bowl large enough for the sandwiches to fit, whisk together the eggs, milk, and salt.

  2. Place all 8 bread slices on your work surface. Spread the mustard on each piece of bread.

  3. Layer the turkey on 4 slices of bread, followed by the cheese and then the ham. Top with the remaining bread slices.

  4. Heat the butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat.

  5. Dip each sandwich into the egg mixture, turning to coat both sides. Then transfer the sandwiches to the pan.

  6. Cover and cook the sandwiches for 3 to 4 minutes, until the undersides begin to brown.

  7. Turn the sandwiches and press lightly with a spatula to compress the filling slightly.

  8. Cover and cook for about 3 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown. (Watch carefully, because the delicate bread can burn easily.)

  9. Turn once more and cook for 1 to 2 minutes, until the cheese has melted completely.

  10. Let stand for 5 minutes. Sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar. Cut diagonally in half and serve with a dollop of jam alongside.
