Spiced Apple pear Butter

Ingredients
  • 2 1/2 pounds Rome Beauty apples, peeled, cored, coarsely chopped
  • 2 pounds pears, peeled, cored, coarsely chopped
  • 1 cup apple cider or apple juice
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup firmly packed golden brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 3x1/2-strip orange peel (orange part only)
Instructions

Position rack in center of oven, preheat to 350F. Combine first 4 ingredients in saucepan. Bring to boil. Reduce heat, cover. Simmer until fruit is very tender, about 15 minutes. Puree fruit mixture in food processor. Mix in 1/2 cup sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg Transfer mixture to 8-inch square glass baking dish, add orange peel. Bake uncovered until mixture is dark and thick, stirring often, about 1 hour 20 minutes. Discard peel. Transfer butter to bowl, cool completely.
